A spokesman for the Indian navy in New Delhi said the naval ship Tabar, meaning Battle Axe, intercepted a pirate mother ship towing two speedboats. The Tabar is a stealth frigate, one of the most modern in the Indian navy, and it immediately approached the target. The slow-moving mother ship was full of heavily-armed pirates and towing fast-moving speedboats used to attack targets in the open sea. Commander Nirad Sinha said: "Pirates were seen roaming on the upper deck of the vessel with guns and rocket propelled grenade launchers. "The vessel continued to make threatening calls and subsequently fired upon INS Tabar.'' Gunners on the Tabar fired back using a medium-machine gun in an exchange of fire that lasted until long after night had fallen. Indian crew saw a fire take hold on the pirate ship and heard explosions, presumed to come from ammunition detonating in the blaze. Before the ship sank the two speedboats managed to escape in the dark easily outrunning the Indian ship. Last week the Tabar was involved in a daring mission featuring marine commandos foiling an attempt by pirates to hijack a cargo vessel jointly owned by Indian and Saudi businessmen. ..more..http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/piracy/3485425/Pirate-boat-sunk-but-attacks-continue-off-Somalia.html
