BRUSSELS, Kingdom of Belgium, September 18, 2009— Javier Solana, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), issued the following statement condemning today’s terrorist attack against the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM):
“I condemn in the strongest possible terms today’s terrorist attack against the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) that killed and injured a number of people and damaged AMISOM’s military headquarters. I am saddened by the news of the death of the Deputy Force Commander of AMISOM and I extend my condolences to the families of those who lost their lives, to the African Union and to the governments of Burundi and Uganda.
This deliberate attack by those opposing peace is evidence of the excellent job that AMISOM is doing in support of dialogue and peace in Somalia. I reiterate the European Union’s full support for the African Union and AMISOM in this essential mission. The well-being of the Somali people who deserve to see an end to nearly two decades of conflict is at stake as well as the stability of the broader region.”
