Shelling outside the Villa Somalia
Immediately after the flag was hoisted, five mortars were launched at the presidential compound in Mogadishu but none hit the exact target. ‘‘Al-Shabaab coincided the attacks with the national celebrations aware that the Somali people were busy celebrating independence and wanted to get us off guard,’’ a TFG Commander at the Villa Somalia told Somalia Report. The people ignored the shelling and went ahead to sing the Somali National Anthem and later welcomed the TFG heads to deliver their speeches.

The light has been lit and it’s a green light for Somalia now,’’ President Sharif Ahmed said.‘‘It’s very interesting to see us marking Independence Day but how free are we? In 1960 we freed ourselves from the colonizers but we are still under another colony; al-Shabaab, who are colonizing Somalia now,” he posed. The president said that he regarded al-Shabaab as the new colonizers and urged them to respect the people of Somalia by ending atrocities towards innocent people.‘‘We are now heading to the holy month of Ramadan and I call on the extremists to have mercy on the people of Somalia who have been affected by the war and the drought with virtually having nothing to feed themselves.”
