Press Release
The proponents of “Somaliland”, a one-clan and self-styled in the North west of Somalia have been relentlessly propagating flimsy justifications and hackneyed collections of false claims for the last 19 years, in order to get an international recognition for this clan-based entity. As no country has so far recognised this clan entity and therefore, out of sheer dismay and desperation, some of “Somaliland´s” clique and namely the quasi-party opposition leaders have turned to Israel for recognition. Obviously it appears now that these members have recently contacted a low-level member from the Israel foreign office in London and according to a local Israeli paper, the Israel government hinted that it was willing to recognise “Somaliland”.Further, and according to the some of “Somalilands” newspaper, the Israeli newspaper of Haaretz Daily quoted that the Israeli government is eying the strategic importance of the Red sea and Horn. These Somaliland sources also claim that as Israel was the first among 35 countries that recognised “Somaliland” in 1960 when it received its independence from Great Britain, the Israeli government is now ready to mull a reinstatement of the recognition given to Somaliland in 1960.
While one can understand the excessive bid of the secessionists to sell a dead cause, what specially amazes all and particularly all Somalis is the shameless, unabashed and repetitive propaganda of mendacious mantras that have been typical of the desperate secessionists for the last few years.
It is no secret that these claims do not hold water and certainly no learned politician, privy to the international relationship, let alone the governments of 35 countries would have recognised, a transient administration in 1960 that was only to exist for four days and was to melt away in 1st July 1960 due to the unification of two administrations of the then British Somaliland Protectorate and Italian Somaliland. Also, one has to bear in mind that what was known as British Somaliland Protectorate had been a part of the Somali home, curved by the colonisers and had never been a distinctive state and had no separate flag in 1960. The only flag that was raised in 26 June 1960 was the 5-star blue flag which represented all Somali territories and for the record that flag was created by Mr Mohamed Awale who was hailing from southern part of the Somali home, occupied by the Italians.
Again if the claims that 35 countries recognised the transient administration of the British Somaliland in 1960 were true, the records would have been available in the archives of both the UN and the 35 countries, mentioned and lately invented by the proponents of the secession.
Citing the above-mentioned acts of these clan-entity cliques, NSUM expresses its strongest condemnation to the attempts and actions of these self-interested and egoism-driven proponents of “Somaliland” who immorally exploit the current and dire situation of Somalia and want to dwarf and destroy our beloved country. NSUM also warns and reminds the international community that if this clan entity is recognised, and as a result Somalia, the most homogeneous nation in Africa and the world is divided, so the so-called Somaliland would sooner or later be divided and a subsequent chain reaction would not stop there but this would let the genie out of the bottle as what is sauce for the clan-entity of Somaliland goose is sauce for the other clans in the very north of Somalia as well as in the whole region.
