Puntland lawmaker Saed Hassan Shire was elected parliament speaker on Saturday after garnering 40 votes out of the 66 votes cast.
His main rival, incumbent speaker, Abdirashid Mohamed Hersi came in second with 26 votes.
In his first comments as parliament speaker, Shire thanked the legislators who voted for him as well as candidates who participated in the election.
Five candidates were vying for the top post of Puntland’s parliament.Shire was the immediate former Puntland livestock minister.
The next move is the parliament to elect a president for Puntland on January 8.At least 15 candidates are in the running for the top job, including incumbent president Abdirahman Mohamed Farole who has been in power since 2009.
