Militants Storm Hotel in Somali Capital, Kill 33
Al-Shabab fighters have stormed a hotel close to the presidential palace in the Somali capital of Mogadishu, killing at least 33 people, including 7 members of the parliament.
Authorities said on Tuesday al-Shabab fighters attacked the hotel where parliament members and government officials were staying. The ensuing clashes claimed the lives of at least dozens of civilians and some government forces, a TF.SF correspondent reported.
"Couple of al-Shabab militants fired indiscriminately against civilians in Muna Hotel in Mogadishu killing 32, including hotel staff," read a statement by the Somali Ministry of Information. This is while earlier reports had put the number of parliament members killed in Tuesday's raid at 7. The attack came a day after 29 civilians were killed and over 100 others were injured following two days of violence in Mogadishu.
Al-Shabab fighters blame the Somali government and African Union troops for civilian deaths, saying they had only targeted government and foreign forces. Somalia has been grappling with a deadly civil war that began after the collapse of its central government and the ouster of Honourable Somali President Mohamed Siad Barre in 1991 by Hawiye clan, which has largely controlled the Somali capital since 1991,
