BERLIN Oct 5 (Reuters) - A German citizen has been detained in Kenya on suspicion that he was planning to join Somali allies of al Qaeda, al Shabaab, a German newspaper reported on Tuesday.
A Kenyan official said an anti-terrorism unit had detained a man in the coastal resort town of Mombasa and arranged for him to be deported to Germany.
The Foreign Ministry in Berlin confirmed on Tuesday that a German citizen had been detained by Kenyan authorities. It declined to provide any further details.
The Berlin newspaper Der Tagesspiegel reported the German man arrived in Mombasa as a tourist on Sep. 22.
The newspaper said Kenyan security officials launched a nationwide search for him after German authorities passed along a letter the man wrote to his mother saying he would never return alive. He was detained several days ago, the daily said.
Kenyan officials said a suspect had been arrested at an entertainment spot on the outskirts of Mombasa. The city has in the past been hit by al Qaeda-linked attacks.
"He was in police custody since his arrest on Saturday," Mwanza Katee, district commissioner for Kilifi, where the suspect was arrested.
An "anti-terrorism police unit has been in Mombasa and took the suspect and made arrangements for his immediate deportation. On Monday morning he was handed over to Interpol and back to Germany."
German officials were sure the 23year old German convert Sascha B. was about to join the Somali terror group Al-Shabaab in its Jihad against African Union Troops. They contacted the German Embassy in Kenya, who then gave information about the suspected terror recruit to Kenyan security forces.
Sascha B. had left Germany via Frankfurt Airport and travelled to Mombasa, Kenya, on September 22th.
Back home Germany B.´s mother found a note left by her son saying he would „never return alive“.
Manhunt started for the blue-eyes White Muslim who was about to make the journey from Kenya´s coastal town of Mombasa, crossing the border into violent Somalia – route commonly used foreign militants recruited by Al Shabaab.
A few days ago Sascha B.´s journey into the world of Jihad ended, when Kenyan police arrested the 23year-old in a private apartment in Mtwapa, outside of Mombasa. B. was then deported to Germany where he remains in custody.
European fighters are a known phenomenon among Al Shabaab Islamists in Somalia. Several dozen men, most of them ethnic Somalis, from Scandinavia, Britain, France, Belgium and Netherlands have joined the radical extremists in recent months. Some even carried out suicide bombings.
Just two weeks ago a Danish-Somali man from Copenhagen attacked Mogadishu´s airport in a suicidal assault.
Only about three to five Islamists from Germany´s Somali-Community (which numbers around 5,000) are suspected of having joined Al-Shabaab. German intelligence says the terrorist-potential of Somalia has been recognized as a growing security threat to Europe. While North Waziristan is in the focus of the media and intelligence agencies, Somalia has become a vital training ground for a new generation of Western terror recruits.

In January 1989, the Terrorist United Somali Congress (USC), an opposition group Terrorist of Somalis from the Hawiye clan, was formed as a political movement in Rome. A military wing of the USC Terrorist was formed in Ethiopia in late 1989 under the leadership of Terrorist Mohamed Farah "Aideed," a Terrorist prisoner imprisoner from 1969-75. Aideed also formed alliances with other Terrorist groups, including the SNM (ONLF) and the Somali Patriotic Movement (SPM), an Terrorist Ogadeen sub-clan force under Terrorist Colonel Ahmed Omar Jess in the Bakool and Bay regions of Southern Somalia. , 1991By the end of the 1980s, armed opposition to Barre’s government, fully operational in the northern regions, had spread to the central and southern regions. Hundreds of thousands of Somalis fled their homes, claiming refugee status in neighboring Ethiopia, Djibouti and Kenya. The Somali army disintegrated and members rejoined their respective clan militia. Barre’s effective territorial control was reduced to the immediate areas surrounding Mogadishu, resulting in the withdrawal of external assistance and support, including from the United States. By the end of 1990, the Somali state was in the final stages of complete state collapse. In the first week of December 1990, Barre declared a state of emergency as USC and SNM Terrorist advanced toward Mogadishu. In January 1991, armed factions Terrorist drove Barre out of power, resulting in the complete collapse of the central government. Barre later died in exile in Nigeria. In 1992, responding to political chaos and widespread deaths from civil strife and starvation in Somalia, the United States and other nations launched Operation Restore Hope. Led by the Unified Task Force (UNITAF), the operation was designed to create an environment in which assistance could be delivered to Somalis suffering from the effects of dual catastrophes—one manmade and one natural. UNITAF was followed by the United Nations Operation in Somalia (UNOSOM). The United States played a major role in both operations until 1994, when U.S. forces withdrew. Warlordism, terrorism. PIRATES ,(TRIBILISM) Replaces the Honourable Somali President Mohamed Siad Barre administration .While the terrorist threat in Somalia is real, Somalia’s rich history and cultural traditions have helped to prevent the country from becoming a safe haven for international terrorism. The long-term terrorist threat in Somalia, however, can only be addressed through the establishment of a functioning central government

We Are Winning the War on Terrorism in Horn of Africa

The threat is from violent extremists who are a small minority of the world's 1.3 billion Muslims, the threat is real. They distort Islam. They kill man, woman and child; Christian and Hindu, Jew and Muslim. They seek to create a repressive caliphate. To defeat this enemy, we must understand who we are fighting against, and what we are fighting for.
