Mogadishu — At least 400 Somalis, who are allegedly being targeted by the Islamist group, al Shabaab, for supporting African peacekeepers in that country, have appealed to the Ugandan government to evacuate them to Kampala.
Speaking to foreign journalists in Mogadishu on Wednesday, the group presented a statement saying the al Shabaab are accusing them of collaborating with African Union peacekeepers and the Transitional Federal Government.
Their names and pictures, they said, have been pinned on Bakara Market walls as betrayers of the jihad and should therefore be killed. Mr Abdul Hagate, who presented the statement, appealed to the Ugandan and Kenyan governments to evacuate them. "We receive calls every day from al shabaab saying they are going to kill us," he said, "thirteen of our colleagues have already been killed. We appeal to Uganda and Kenya to take us out of this place," he said.
Ms Abdi Amina, a mother of nine, who is wanted for working with the transitional government, broke down and cried as she narrated her story of how the al shabaab kidnapped and killed her daughter after searching her house and failing to find her. "They came home looking for me. Luckily enough I was in the bathroom but they took my daughter and killed her after she refused to tell them where I was," she said.
The accusations
The al Shabaab accuse Ms Amina of collaborating with Ugandan peacekeepers and Ethiopia. The spokesperson of African Union mission, Maj. Ba-Hoku Barigye, said he was aware of the list but said it would be hard to evacuate them to Uganda. He instead proposed that the international community should intervene and flash al Shabaab out of Mogadishu.
Ms Amina said the insurgents bribed her brother to kill her. "I don't trust anybody even if it's my brother because they have given him money to kill me. If I had means to leave this country, I would leave," she said. Most of these wanted people have now run to areas controlled by Amisom and the Somali government.

We Are Winning the War on Terrorism in Horn of Africa
The threat is from violent extremists who are a small minority of the world's 1.3 billion Muslims, the threat is real. They distort Islam. They kill man, woman and child; Christian and Hindu, Jew and Muslim. They seek to create a repressive caliphate. To defeat this enemy, we must understand who we are fighting against, and what we are fighting for.
