Woman gets probation for lying in al-Shabaab case

update on Woman who lied in Somali terrorism case can be deported, federal prosecutors say

A former Minnesota woman who lied to a grand jury about raising money for men who left the state to join a terrorist group in Somalia was sentenced Wednesday to three years of probation and ordered to perform community service.
Saynab Hussein, 24, of Nashville, Tenn., showed remorse during the sentencing hearing in U.S. District Court in Minneapolis. She pleaded guilty in August to one count of perjury in the government's long-running investigation into recruiting and financing for al-Shabaab, a terrorist group with links to al-Qaida.
"I wish I could go back and change it all if I could," Hussein told U.S. District Judge Michael Davis.
As part of her sentence, Davis ordered Hussein to perform 100 hours of community service each year she's on probation -- educating the Somali community about the threat of terrorism and the U.S. government's role in helping stabilize the community.
"This is extremely important," Davis said of the community service. He said he took many factors into consideration for her sentence, including the fact that she was 18 at the time and likely didn't understand the consequences of her crime and that she has provided assistance to investigators.
Since late 2007, at least 22 young men have left Minnesota to join al-Shabaab.
Some have died, some remain at large and others were among those prosecuted for their role in what the FBI said was one of the largest efforts to recruit U.S. fighters to a foreign terrorist organization. The investigation is active.
Hussein admitted she lied in June 2009 when she told a grand jury she didn't know anyone who raised money for the travelers; she actually helped raise money herself. Assistant U.S. Attorney LeeAnn Bell said Hussein lied again in 2012 and came clean only when investigators confronted her with evidence.
Prosecutors sought a two-year prison sentence, arguing Hussein was firmly rooted in the conspiracy, knew operational details -- such as code words the men used to keep the plan secret -- and even warned the men to be careful in case the FBI was listening. Prosecutors say in court documents that she helped raise money for a traveler.
But defense attorney Dulce Foster said Hussein was merely a naive teenager who came to the U.S. at 10 years old after living in a refugee camp and was trying to fit in with a group of peers who led her in the wrong direction.
"She is not and has never been a radical or extremist," Foster said, adding that her client lied because she was scared.
Hussein has since moved to Tennessee, married and has a young son. She is pursuing a career in nursing. She told Davis she would never harm "this great nation I call home" and she asked for a second chance so she can do positive work in the Somali community.
Hussein is not a U.S. citizen and could be subject to deportation. Foster said after Wednesday's hearing that no immigration proceedings are pending.

Australians seize $123m drugs off Somalia coast

                                                 Narcotics confiscated by police

An Australian warship has seized heroin with an estimated street value of $123 million off the coast of Somalia, the Defence department said Thursday.
The 449kg haul was found on a dhow, a type of sailing vessel, intercepted by HMAS Darwin while patrolling the Indian Ocean some 40 nautical miles off Somalia's east coast.
The ship's commander, Mr Terry Morrison, said the seizure "removed a major source of funding for terrorist and criminal networks which included al-Qaeda, the Taliban and Al-Shabaab".
The drugs were hidden in 20 bags, each weighing between 20 to 25 kilogrammes each.
HMAS Darwin is part of Combined Maritime Forces (CMF), a naval partnership involving 30 nations that patrols 2.5 million square miles of international waters.
The Australian ship enforces maritime security with a focus on terrorist activity in the Middle East and Indian Ocean regions as part of the British-led Combined Task Force (CTF) 150, which operates under the CMF.
The bust, the CMF's seventh "significant seizure" this year, came three weeks after the Australian and British navies jointly found 1,032 kilogrammes of heroin -- their largest-ever haul -- on a dhow off the coast of east Africa near Kenya and Tanzania.

Somalia: Security Forces Arrest Terror Suspects After Deadly Bombing in Baidoa Abdi Adan Hoosow, Former Governor of Bay region Among the terror suspects

 Abdifatah Mahamed Ibraahim
Baidoa — Somali security forces operating in Bay regional capital of Baidoa of southwestern Somalia have arrested terror suspects in a massive security operation on Wednesday, terror free somalia  reports.
According to officials, intelligence briefings led to the arrest of three alleged organizers and the closure of garage.
"Definitely, the recent deadly suicide bombing was orchestrated at a garage in the town, we arrested three persons who have been linked to terror act and closed the garage," said Abdi Adan Hoosow, the Governor of Bay region. "Among the terror suspects are the owner of garage and two technicians".
Continuing, he added that one of the relatives of the suicide bomber was also seized during the security sweep. On Monday, a suicide bomber hit vehicles carrying politician and former governor of Bay region Abdifatah Geesey, killing a dozen including civilians and uniformed soldiers. Despite military offensives in south-central Somalia, Al Shabaab honed military-style ambushes, suicide bombings and planned assassinations.

Somali Al Qaeda Ally Sends ‘Friend Request’ to Would-Be Jihadists in US

WASHINGTON - Al Qaeda's Somali franchise is sending a “friend request” and offering a one-way ticket to martyrdom to young Americans this week with a new video urging potential recruits in rhyme to catch "the next flight to Mogadishu."
The short tape by al-Shabab extremists displayed an airline "boarding pass" originating from Minneapolis, where more than 24 Somali-Americans since 2008 have been recruited to join the group in East Africa, according to federal prosecutors.
Squatting amidst a gaggle of fighters in woodland camouflage brandishing Kalashnikov rifles and with their faces swathed in kaffiyeh scarves, an unidentified militant speaking what appeared to be American English read a short poem appealing to his countrymen.
"This is a message to the youth in the West; A caring brother sends you a friend request," the speaker begins, advising that tossing a few clothes in a backpack and joining their jihad "is the smart call, just like the brothers in the Westgate Mall.”
Last September, a small band of al-Shabab terrorists entered the upscale Westgate Mallfrequented by westerners in Nairobi, Kenya, and began killing shoppers.
"You’d make a fine troop," the American al-Shabab fighter concluded. "So, next flight to Mogadishu, what’s missing is you.”
Al-Shabab leader Mukhtar Ali Zubeyr, known as "Godane," has eliminated rivals within the group and, after finally being designated as an official franchise of al Qaeda in 2012 by al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri, wants his foreign fighters "to stay relevant," said one Africa expert.
"All of his threats are out of the way. His foreign fighters are trying to stay afloat now that they're part of al Qaeda," Rudy Atallah, an Atlantic Council expert retired from U.S. special operations, told ABC News today.
On top of those from the twin cities' large Somali community, more than three dozen other Americans -- not all of Somali descent -- in places such as Daphne, Alabama; Seattle, Washington; Portland, Maine and elsewhere also have joined Shabab, were nabbed while recruiting for the group or attempted to travel to Somalia to fight with their "mujahideen."
No other al Qaeda franchise -- much less the Pakistan-based “core” of the organization -- has accumulated so many radicalized Americans and other westerners, including Britons. Al-Shabab has leveraged this success to appeal to others.
The video released Tuesday was part of a series by Shabab called "Mujahideen Moments." The first "episode," released in February 2013, starred a disguised American jihadi calling himself "Abu Ahmed al-Amriki," who implored westerners to fight in Somalia, Mali, Afghanistan and Iraq or to “fight the enemies of Allah where you find them.”
“America is going down,” the man said. via ABC

AlShabaab, AlQaeda affiliate in Somalia, calls on Muslims living abroad to undertake Lone Wolf mission

A new English-language video issued by Al Shabaab, the Somali Al Qaeda affiliate, calls on Muslims living abroad to either undertake “a lone wolf mission” in their home countries or to travel abroad to join foreign terrorist organizations.
Al Shabaab has long been active in recruiting Westerners, and particularly Americans, to its cause. Between 2007 and 2012, over 60 U.S. citizens and permanent residents attempted to aid or join the terrorist organization.
The video comes in the midst of an upsurge in sophisticated English-language propaganda disseminated by terrorist organizations over the internet that is aimed at encouraging Americans and other Westerners to undertake violent actions.
Other Al Qaeda groups, such as Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, have long advised their ideological adherents to undertake lone wolf attacks and domestic radicalization rather than travel abroad.
However, Al Shabaab had previously been more focused on strengthening its organization in Somalia. By presenting Muslims abroad with a choice between material support and lone wolf action rather than only calling on them to travel to Somalia, though, this video may mark a shift in Al Shabaab’s strategy.
The video is the fifth in a series called “Mujahideen Moments” but is the first to be presented exclusively in English.
In addition to its call for violent activity, it also references Al Shabaab’s 2013 attack on the Westgate Mall in Nairobi, Kenya, as a positive example for those contemplating terrorism abroad.

On May 5, speaking on VOA Somali Service Abdirashid Janan declared that they are battling Al Qaeda-lined Al Shabaab fighters and anti-Jubaland elements.
"In step towards active decentralization in Somalia, I and a group of politicians in Gedo region lobbied for the formation of Jubaland forces," said Janan. Somalia: Dirty Blood Operating Inside the Architects of the Social System

culusow (tuug la qabtay talo ma leh)
OPINION
Every country is proud of its new generations who positively contribute to the well-being of their social changes. The society is benefiting greatly from the advancement created by their new blood in the values added to the development of the new products and services in technology, science, and social welfare. The new generations enrich the wisdom left by their preceding generations and enhance their failed efforts that are left behind. The main aim is that the new generation leads the society to go forward in the direction of a prosperous future.
A new generation is lost when they grow up in a disadvantageous situation where they inherit skills of social evils in a lawlessness environment. Malpractices of visionary corruption, clannish ideology, legitimized organized crimes of all kinds in the forms of armed factions, and ruthless autocratic rules all bring the society to backwardness. Such generations of destructive minds add dirty blood in the machinery of a social system and that is a critical contamination that leads to failure.
In Somalia, the current Somali leader presents himself as an innovative faction leader. He follows the footsteps of the armed oppositional religious leader and their organizational structure. The main aim of this approach is to infringe the intellectual properties of this organization and reform it in an unimpeachable, plausible association. Inexperienced, unskilled youth are mainly used as the bad force to carry out covert executions, corruptions, and mismanagement of public administrations. Selected defectors from the armed opposition are trained secretly in short time in certain countries in the Middle East. These elite youth take up all sensitive government positions and have been chosen not by job qualifications, but to the loyalty of the leader. Most of these privileged core groups end up working in secret services and in revenue making financial services known as NGOs. In addition, the process of their selection is a mixture of fitting the right clan lines or being estranged to their extended families.
The idea behind deploying unqualified young organizational cadres is their ability to do dirty jobs and in merit to be compensated to climb the carrier ladder in fast pace. You might notice that some of them have got the highest rank in the military in less than four years of being in the job. The current regime benefits by utilizing the youth who had no opportunity of formal education or jobs. In the past these young men were abused child soldiers in the warring clan factions and they committed as child soldiers atrocities and civil suffering during civil war. The right approach to those disadvantageous youth is to offer psychiatric help in rehabilitation camps.
Another view of using dirty blood in the governing system is to use them as the guardians of an autocratic leader. Their criminal activities are justified as they are obediently serving the duties assigned by their supreme political bosses and they have no concern of facing the justice in being accountable to their unlawful actions. It is a scary practice to employ the youth based on the extensiveness of their criminal background and their loyalty to a secret sect organization and its spiritual leader.
Since the current leader came to the office, the Somali society felt degraded in every aspect of their lives. The mainstream security forces and the people feel discontent with the president and his cohorts. The international community is astonished with the high extent of widespread corruption practices in every level of the Somali government and is skeptical to hand over aid money to the current Somali government leadership. The Somali government is very weak and not capable of collecting internal revenue from taxes due to the lack of government service delivery and the absent of public administrations in most cities of the country. The people are facing the loss of hope due to the lack of job creations and soaring economic hardships. These two factors combined together restrict the ability of the people to purchase essential commodities for their lives and as a result force their standard of living in far depth under the conventional poverty line. The challenging reality of famine, malnutrition, and tribal wars are on the rise in many parts of the country. The blame of these intentional serious consequences is the bad leadership skills of the Somali current president and his ambitious autocratic rule through energizing his influence with dirty blood in the bureaucratic machine of his regime.
The blame of catastrophic happenings in the Somali people in the near future is not exclusively that the president will be responsible solely, but also the parliament, executive council, and the international community are partnerships of accomplice too. Before it is too late we are all obligated to demand the president to step down and transfer the power peacefully to the parliament. No matter how much time he wants to remain in office, the situation will get worse and practically there is no chance of hope for getting better. It is in the best interest of the country that the president should admit his erroneous mistaken thinking and apologize to the Somali public for not delivering his promises and not meeting their expectations. It was a missed opportunity that the president did not listen to the outrages of public concerns that demanded to fire the team leaders of his close aides in the governmental cabinet positions who were identified as incompetent and a waste in the council of the executive power.
The Somali People's Party is very concerned about atrocities committed by Kenyan authorities and its police brutality against innocent Somali civilians in Kenya. We know that the current Kenyan leadership is alleged of violating in the past the human rights of its own citizens and it is unrealistic to expect them to respect the human rights of foreign nationalities. We are condemning the brutal campaign of hate against ethnic profiling of Somali nationalities in Kenya. We are asking also the international community to intervene in the indiscriminate collective punishment based on resentment to Somali ethnicity. The Somali People's Party is asking the Somali Government to terminate the presence of Kenyan military forces in the Somali Soil and verify to the Somali people an exact time frame of their clear exit plan.
The Somali People's Party is welcoming the recommendations of the members of the parliament who kindly asked the president to step down. We strongly support that the president reflects the request of the MPs and consider that their will is a voice of confidence. The voices of the MPs are endowed with highest power of the government and should not be considered as a personal view. We urge the president not to make the mistake of ignoring the general will of the parliament and to take the brave decision of accepting the bitter outcome of his unsuccessful leadership.

Police nab member of Al-Shabaab Somalia terror group

KUALA LUMPUR: Members of a Somalian terrorist group known as Al-Shabaab have been entering Malaysia pretending to be private college students and tourists.
The Bukit Aman Special Branch Counter Terrorism Unit has been tracking six Al-Shabaab members who entered the country in the past few weeks, according to sources.
They said the group planned to set up a base in Malaysia to hide their members from the authorities.
Some of the members had left the country but police were monitoring those still here, the sources said.
Bukit Aman Special Branch Counter Terrorism Unit officers detaining the 34-year-old Somalian man, believed to be a member of Al-Shabaab terrorist group.

They added that Al-Shabaab had no links with the militants arrested in Selangor and Kedah recently.
Police achieved a breakthrough when they arrested a 34-year-old Somalian man, wanted by Interpol for alleged terror links, in Selangor yesterday.
“More arrests are expected soon. The police have to act fast before this terrorist group gains a foothold in the country,” one source said.
Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Bakri Zinin said the man, who was detained at about 4pm, was believed to be involved with the Al-Shabaab terrorist faction.
“He was previously charged with being involved in terror activities in East Africa and was listed in Interpol’s Red Notice (meaning he is being sought to be extradited to his country of origin).
“We are investigating his activities in Malaysia to uncover Al-Shabaab’s network whose members might be hiding or planning action that can threaten the country’s safety,” he said in a statement.
The man is being investigated under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012.
It is learned that police are still searching for a weapon cache the man may have.According to the US National Counter Terrorism Centre (http://www.nctc.gov/site/groups/al_shabaab.html), the Harakat Shabaab al-Mujahidin – commonly known as Al-Shabaab – is the militant wing of the Somali Council of Islamic Courts that took over most of southern Somalia in the second half of 2006.
Despite the group’s defeat by Somali and Ethiopian forces in 2007, Al-Shabaab – which is clan-based – has continued its violent insurgency in southern and central Somalia.
The group has exerted temporary and, at times, sustained control over strategic locations in those areas, using guerilla warfare and terrorist tactics.

Somalia: Somali Legislators Call On the President to Resign

Mr. Mohamed Sheikh Osman Jawari - (Speaker of the Somali Parliament)

press release

Almost 130 legislators gathered together at a hotel in Mogadishu, they called on the Somali President Hassan Sheikh to resign in a strongly worded letter:
Federal Republic of Somalia
Date: 05/05/14
To: President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud - (President of the Somali Federal Republic)
CC: Mr. Mohamed Sheikh Osman Jawari - (Speaker of the Somali Parliament)
CC: Ambassador Nickolas Kay - (UN Special Representative of the Secretary General)
Re: Call for resignation
Dear Mr. President,
We, the Somali legislators listed below are fulfilling the duties expected of us to protect the state affairs of Somalia, and have therefore decided to call on you (President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud) to resign after we have found you incompetent of carrying out the pledges you made when you stood as presidential candidate in 2012. We have noted that if you had acted out the 6 pillars you stated in your presidential campaign, the country would be in a much better state than it is in now and overcome the years of anarchy following the fall of the central government in 1991, in terms of politics, security, economics, good governance, social development and reconciliation.
A considerate number of us have discovered that you Mr. President have failed in:
Strengthening peace in the country, creating high judiciary system and good governance
Reviving community and social spirit among the society
Enforcing peace and reconciliation
Enlivening the country's financial institutions
National unity and harmony
Creating international relations with foreign governments and agencies
These 6 pillars, announced by you Mr. President in your 2012 presidential campaign was the main and vital reason that we, the legislators of the Somali parliament elected you as our president.
Now that we have seen that your leadership has failed in:
Developing clear and reasonable plans in enforcing peace in Somalia build regional administrations for the Somali people; implement federalism based on justice and good governance.
Reviving public services for the society: higher education, health, water and energy.
Enforce safety in Somalia, form strong and obsolete security forces that have the ability and strength to protect the safety of all Somali citizens. Also in resolving clan tensions that have become consistent in Hiran, Lower Shabelle, Middle Shabelle regions & other poor regional administration governance.
Stopping political interference among politicians that might aggravate the armed enemy (al-Shabab), to know that to end this war against the enemy is not just using the military but political means and negotiations.
Battling corruption against senior officials in the government, developing functioning financial institutions and generate revenue from customs at the seaport, airport, etc.
Continuing the peace talks with Somaliland, but shortening them.
Refuting diplomatic relations with Kenya, closing the Somali embassy in Nairobi due to the persistent mistreatment of Somalis in that country (whilst you were there too).
Being successful in appointing regional governors and district administrations in regions/districts liberated from al-Shabab. This gave the terrorists a chance for them to recapture the towns and barricade government troops entering through the borders.
Your leadership has failed in implementing proper justice system in the country, and failing to carry out the topics agreed in the National Security Conference held in Mogadishu in April 2013. You also failed in founding the Constitutional Court which is a violation of the 109th article, 2nd sub-topic.
Appointing committees consisting of independent individuals to fight corruption, as listed in the constitution in 111th article, which caused government expenditure and property to be stolen through corruption.
Reconciliation among Somali clans/tribes and regional administrations, and appointing a reconciliation committee, on the 111th article in the constitution.
Your leadership failed to secure the safety of Somalia in where government institutions like courts, presidential palace and United Nations compound was attacked as well as murders of legislators, government officials as well as civilians.
Allowing national documentation and passports to be taken, this is violation of the 8th article in the Somali provisional constitutions.
That your leadership has shown incompetent in being able to participate in carrying out democratic elections in August 2016.
Because of the reasons we outlined above, we ask that you, the Somali President (Hassan Sheikh Mohamud), take this letter wisely and resign from your title.
Yours sincerely,

Maine House GOP News: GOP Leader Visits Lewiston Refugee Community

Maine House GOP News: GOP Leader Visits Lewiston Refugee Community

Could Somalis swing to GOP: In the Twin Cities, a shifting Somali alliance

Abdimalik Askar rising star in the GOP

Though the intriguing trend in the Somali community toward an advocacy for Republican and conservative ideas and a defection from the DFL camp is worrisome to some, it is not surprising.
During the recent election the DFL undertook to bus Somali immigrants to polling station, employing rhetoric that the party would fight for them against the Republican push to cut benefits. But this claim simply doesn't work anymore. The DFL gospel that accuses the Republicans of being elitist, snobbish, selfish, obscenely rich and out of touch of our reality is finally now being carefully scrutinized.
In the 1990s, Somalis began to trickle into the Twin Cities, and most of the broader population did not take notice. Since then, the Somali community has grown tremendously, and the Twin Cities now boasts the largest Somali population of any urban area in the country.
Somalis now populate the center of Minneapolis, the Cedar Riverside area and beyond into suburbs and small towns throughout the state. They have slowly developed social networks, odd jobs here and there with very limited language capability. More Somali children are enrolled in elementary and high schools, and Somali business centers went up first mostly in Minneapolis, later spreading to other areas.
Having lived through years of strife and civil war, life once again has started to blossom, with the exception that the Somali community is now politically schizophrenic. The lives of immigrants in general, particularly Somalis, are not in line with DFL political views. Somalis are generally conservative in aspects of social issues and yet are tied to the DFL by the simple notion that Republican are out there to take away their rights and means of living. This polemic disarmed the community and reduced them to a voting bloc for the DFL. But this kind of discourse, advocating for perpetual government dependence and handouts without any tacit instruction of how to move away from this situation, is perplexing.
The paternalistic attitude of DFLers toward the Somali community -- as a voting bloc rather than as individuals who bring something to the table -- is harmful. Graduation rates of immigrants in Minneapolis high schools are deplorable, and city taxation and business regulations are stifling entrepreneurial spirit.
Furthermore, the recent 300-page report by Advocates for Human Rights, a Minneapolis-based nonprofit, disclosed the worst racial disparities in health, education and other sectors of public services to immigrant populations living in Minnesota. The grueling question is, who is behind all these failed policies?
The Somali community is going through transformative ideological shifts and is edging into the electoral system. Having unseated senior city council member Robert Lilligren by a wide margin, it is now engaged in political combat with another senior legislator, longtime DFL Rep. Phyllis Kahn of Minneapolis, District 60B.
The debate about political affiliation now rages inside the coffee places, living rooms and mosques, and one thing everyone seems to agree is that the DFL thus far is keeping the community isolated in a revolving door of poverty and government dependence.

Yemen Security Brief
  • Suspected al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) militants ambushed a Yemeni military convoy en route to joining a military offensive on April 29 in the town of al Saeed in Shabwah governorate. The militants attacked the convoy with machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades and captured a troop transport vehicle, taking 15 Yemeni soldiers hostage. The militants released two of the Yemeni soldiers shortly following the ambush, and reports indicate that the released soldiers had been “severely beaten.” In addition to the death of at least 12 militants, at least 15 Yemeni soldiers were killed, and 12 were wounded in the fighting. On April 30, suspected AQAP militants executed three of the remaining 13 Yemeni soldiers taken hostage in the April 29 ambush, and left their bodies near a road intersection in the city of Ataq in Shabwah governorate.  Following the discovery of the three Yemeni soldiers, all of whom bore signs of torture, Yemeni security forces reportedly withdrew from the al Saeed area. The status of the final ten Yemeni soldiers held hostage remains unknown.[1]
  • Yemeni Security Forces seized a group of ten armed gunmen in possession of weapons, ammunition and explosive devices in Abyan governorate on April 29. One of the gunmen may have links to AQAP, although further details regarding the event remain unclear.[2]
  • Nigerian citizen Lawal Olaniyi Babafemi, also known as Ayatollah Mustapha, pled guilty in U.S. Federal Court to charges of “providing material support to an al Qaeda affiliate, and participating in its media and recruitment campaigns,” on April 29 in New York. Babafemi is accused of traveling to Yemen and working directly with AQAP’s media arm, al Malahem Media Foundation, to help publish its English-language magazine, “Inspire,” as well as recruit English-speaking Nigerians to join AQAP.[3]
Horn of Africa Security Brief
  • Puntland police detained 12 suspected al Shabaab militants and sympathizers, including three women, during a security operation in Boosaaso in Bari region on April 29. The police launched the security operation after a suspected militant prematurely detonated an improvised explosive device (IED). The intended target of the IED remains unclear, since no casualties were reported from the blast. Separately, a landmine explosion killed four people and injured three others in Daboole Weyne near Dhabad in Galgudud region on April 30. It remains unclear whether the landmine was planted recently or a remnant of past conflict.[4]
  • Unidentified assailants killed three Jubbaland security officers in Kismayo in Lower Jubba region on April 29. Four assailants armed with pistols and assault rifles fired upon the security officers in the Via Afmadow section of Kismayo. The motivation behind the attack remains unclear as no group has yet claimed responsibility for the killings.[5]
  • Al Shabaab militants attacked an AMISOM and Somali National Army (SNA) military base in Garbaharey in Gedo region on April 29. Reports indicate that the leader of SNA forces in the El Ade area of Gedo region, Mohamed Qojof, was among those killed during the fighting. Separately, al Shabaab militants attacked a base occupied by Ethiopian AMISOM forces in Elbur in Galgudud region on April 30. The Ethiopian AMISOM contingent responded to the attack by confronting the militants and firing mortar shells at suspected al Shabaab locations throughout Elbur. Although the confrontation reportedly inflicted casualties to both sides, the exact figures remain unclear.[6]
  • Unspecified Somali security forces conducted a search operation throughout the Heliwa district of Mogadishu on April 30. A Heliwa district official reported that “dozens of people were arrested” by the security forces, citing general insecurity as prompting the operation.[7]

Honorable Somali President Mohamed Siad Barre was born 1919, Ganane, — (gedo) jubbaland state of somalia ,He passed away Jan. 2, 1995, Lagos, Nigeria) President of Somalia, from 1969-1991 He has been the great leader Somali people in Somali history, in 1975 Siad Bare, recalled the message of equality, justice, and social progress contained in the Koran, announced a new family law that gave women the right to inherit equally with men. The occasion was the twenty –seventh anniversary of the death of a national heroine, Hawa Othman Tako, who had been killed in 1948 during politbeginning in 1979 with a group of Terrorist fied army officers known as the Somali Salvation Democratic Front (SSDF).Mr Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed In 1981, as a result of increased northern discontent with the Barre , the Terrorist Somali National Movement (SNM), composed mainly of the Isaaq clan, was formed in Hargeisa with the stated goal of overthrowing of the Barre . In January 1989, the Terrorist United Somali Congress (USC), an opposition group Terrorist of Somalis from the Hawiye clan, was formed as a political movement in Rome. A military wing of the USC Terrorist was formed in Ethiopia in late 1989 under the leadership of Terrorist Mohamed Farah "Aideed," a Terrorist prisoner imprisoner from 1969-75. Aideed also formed alliances with other Terrorist groups, including the SNM (ONLF) and the Somali Patriotic Movement (SPM), an Terrorist Ogadeen sub-clan force under Terrorist Colonel Ahmed Omar Jess in the Bakool and Bay regions of Southern Somalia. , 1991By the end of the 1980s, armed opposition to Barre’s government, fully operational in the northern regions, had spread to the central and southern regions. Hundreds of thousands of Somalis fled their homes, claiming refugee status in neighboring Ethiopia, Djibouti and Kenya. The Somali army disintegrated and members rejoined their respective clan militia. Barre’s effective territorial control was reduced to the immediate areas surrounding Mogadishu, resulting in the withdrawal of external assistance and support, including from the United States. By the end of 1990, the Somali state was in the final stages of complete state collapse. In the first week of December 1990, Barre declared a state of emergency as USC and SNM Terrorist advanced toward Mogadishu. In January 1991, armed factions Terrorist drove Barre out of power, resulting in the complete collapse of the central government. Barre later died in exile in Nigeria. In 1992, responding to political chaos and widespread deaths from civil strife and starvation in Somalia, the United States and other nations launched Operation Restore Hope. Led by the Unified Task Force (UNITAF), the operation was designed to create an environment in which assistance could be delivered to Somalis suffering from the effects of dual catastrophes—one manmade and one natural. UNITAF was followed by the United Nations Operation in Somalia (UNOSOM). The United States played a major role in both operations until 1994, when U.S. forces withdrew. Warlordism, terrorism. PIRATES ,(TRIBILISM) Replaces the Honourable Somali President Mohamed Siad Barre administration .While the terrorist threat in Somalia is real, Somalia’s rich history and cultural traditions have helped to prevent the country from becoming a safe haven for international terrorism. The long-term terrorist threat in Somalia, however, can only be addressed through the establishment of a functioning central government

We Are Winning the War on Terrorism in Horn of Africa

The threat is from violent extremists who are a small minority of the world's 1.3 billion Muslims, the threat is real. They distort Islam. They kill man, woman and child; Christian and Hindu, Jew and Muslim. They seek to create a repressive caliphate. To defeat this enemy, we must understand who we are fighting against, and what we are fighting for.
