Authorities Puntland state of somalia Destroy Anti-Personnel Mines

Garowe,- the Puntland Mine Action Centre (PMAC), with technical support from Mines Advisory Group (MAG), destroyed 48 stockpiled antipersonnel (AP) mines near Garowe, in accordance with the Geneva Call Deed of Commitment for Adherence to a Total Ban on Anti-Personnel Mines and for Cooperation in Mine Action. The Puntland authorities are a signatory to the Deed of Commitment, which pledges them to banning the use, production, acquisition and transfer of AP mines, to destroying their AP mine stocks, and to facilitating mine action activities. Asked about the event, Mr. Yassin Ali Abdulle, Vice-Minister of Interior and Security, stressed that ‘Puntland is determined to destroy its AP mine stockpile in compliance with the Deed of Commitment and will continue to facilitate mine action to the best of its ability. We are grateful for the support provided to date in the form of landmine impact surveys and, more recently, explosive ordnance disposal (EOD). But we also hope that today’s successful operation will help mobilize resources to begin clearing areas contaminated by mines and unexploded ordnance (UXO) in order to prevent future accidents and release contaminated land for the communities to use.’ According to local authorities, AP mines and other dangerous explosive items claim civilian casualties every year. In a recent, dramatic event on 10 July 2008, three children were killed and six injured when a 106mm high explosive anti-tank projectile exploded as children were playing with it on a school football field. MAG and PMAC went down to the accident scene immediately to ensure that no dangerous items remained following the explosion and delivered emergency mine risk education to 80 school teachers. Following meetings with the town elders a ‘UXO hotline’ has been set up for the community to report items of UXO which are then collected and destroyed. The 48 PMP-71 mines destroyed in Garowe were first disclosed to Geneva Call during a field mission in November 2004. The volatile security situation in Somalia and difficulties in securing donor interest delayed their destruction.PMAC and MAG are in the process of training EOD teams and completing an inventory of mines and other explosive ordnances in Puntland’s military camps requiring urgent and safe disposal. Items scheduled for future destruction, security conditions permitting, include the BM-21 rockets and anti-vehicle mines observed by Geneva Call in a military compound in Galkayo in July 2007. MAG is funded in Somalia by the US State Department Office of Weapons Removal and Abatement.Source:Relief Web

They Have No Authority to Remove Me from Chairmanship

Chairman of the ICU Sheik Sharif Sheik Ahmed has opposed a decision to remove him from the chairmanship of theICU . Members of the ICU (AL SHABAAB) Terrorist in Asmara announced yesterday that they have removed him from the position of Chairman which has been holding since the founding the ICU.Sheik Sharif said that the ICU members in Asmara do not have the quorum to remove him from the position and in any case he has don nothing wrong to warrant such a decision.“It takes 2/3 of the membership to remove me from the chairmanship of the organization, and as we know the members in Asmara do not number 2/3 of the membership of ICU” said Sheik Sharif who added that there is no reason for them to remove him from Chairmanship.“They can remove me from the position on two grounds which are incompetence or making mistakes and neither has occurred. The only thing I am being accused of is working for peace” Sheik Sherrif told Shabelle radio of Mogadishu from Djibouti.“If there is a mistake it is being made by the members in Asmara who, contrary to what Islam mandates, have opposed” said Sheik Sharrif who added that the ARS members in Asmara are not free to express their views for fear of reprisal from Eritrean government which he said does not want to see a peaceful Somalia and the withdrawal of Ethiopian troops from Somalia. “Eritrea sees the withdrawal of Ethiopian troops from Somali counterproductive to its interests therefore it would not allow the resolution of the problems in Somalia” said Sheik Sharrif. Sheik Sharif continues his speech by saying that they are (his group) determined to make sure that Ethiopian troops leave Somalia. “We are all struggling to ensure the withdrawal of Ethiopian troops from Somalia therefore what is wrong with striving to that end without the use of the gun” added Sheik Sharrif. All in all, the ICU Terrorist, which was founded by groups from ICU USC. SNA\s, seem to have officially broken into two sides with opposing leadership

'Hidden famine' in Horn of Africa puts 14m at risk

Somalia is on the brink of a "hidden famine" which threatens to leave more than half of the country's population in need of emergency assistance by the end of the year. The entire Horn of Africa, including Ethiopia, Djibouti and parts of Kenya, is gripped by a food crisis. A deepening drought and rocketing food prices have put about 14 million people at risk – three million more than in 2006 when the last major drought hit the region. But the situation is most severe in Somalia. A continuing conflict, pitting Ethiopian and Somali government forces on one side and a variety of Islamist militias on the other, is having a devastating effect on relief operations. more..http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/africa/hidden-famine-in-horn-of-africa-puts-14m-at-risk-874873.html

Statement made by the Special Representative for Somalia, Ahmedou Ould-Abdallah, to the UN Security Council

Mr President
1. This is my third presentation to the Security Council since taking office more than nine months ago.
2. During my first presentation on 17 December, I proposed three options to the Council to address the Somali crisis. The first option was to continue ‘business as usual’ with massive assistance including humanitarian aid as we have done for the past 18 years. During the last ten years, the official amount of assistance given to Somalia is in the vicinity of 6 – 8 billion dollars. This approach has helped save millions of lives and should be commended and pursued. However its side effects can not be ignored and it can not be expected to bring lasting peace. Today more than three million Somalis live in exile, more than 800,000 are displaced and the violence continues. A second option was to withdraw from a country where we have yet to make a significant difference. I advanced a third approach to try something different: simultaneous political and security action. more

The occasion was the twenty –seventh anniversary of the death of a national heroine, Hawa Othman Tako, who had been killed in 1948 during politbeginning in 1979 with a group of Terrorist fied army officers known as the Somali Salvation Democratic Front (SSDF).Mr Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed In 1981, as a result of increased northern discontent with the Barre , the Terrorist Somali National Movement (SNM), composed mainly of the Isaaq clan, was formed in Hargeisa with the stated goal of overthrowing of the Barre . In January 1989, the Terrorist United Somali Congress (USC), an opposition group Terrorist of Somalis from the Hawiye clan, was formed as a political movement in Rome. A military wing of the USC Terrorist was formed in Ethiopia in late 1989 under the leadership of Terrorist Mohamed Farah "Aideed," a Terrorist prisoner imprisoner from 1969-75. Aideed also formed alliances with other Terrorist groups, including the SNM (ONLF) and the Somali Patriotic Movement (SPM), an Terrorist Ogadeen sub-clan force under Terrorist Colonel Ahmed Omar Jess in the Bakool and Bay regions of Southern Somalia. , 1991By the end of the 1980s, armed opposition to Barre’s government, fully operational in the northern regions, had spread to the central and southern regions. Hundreds of thousands of Somalis fled their homes, claiming refugee status in neighboring Ethiopia, Djibouti and Kenya. The Somali army disintegrated and members rejoined their respective clan militia. Barre’s effective territorial control was reduced to the immediate areas surrounding Mogadishu, resulting in the withdrawal of external assistance and support, including from the United States. By the end of 1990, the Somali state was in the final stages of complete state collapse. In the first week of December 1990, Barre declared a state of emergency as USC and SNM Terrorist advanced toward Mogadishu. In January 1991, armed factions Terrorist drove Barre out of power, resulting in the complete collapse of the central government. Barre later died in exile in Nigeria. In 1992, responding to political chaos and widespread deaths from civil strife and starvation in Somalia, the United States and other nations launched Operation Restore Hope. Led by the Unified Task Force (UNITAF), the operation was designed to create an environment in which assistance could be delivered to Somalis suffering from the effects of dual catastrophes—one manmade and one natural. UNITAF was followed by the United Nations Operation in Somalia (UNOSOM). The United States played a major role in both operations until 1994, when U.S. forces withdrew. Warlordism, terrorism. PIRATES ,(TRIBILISM) Replaces the Honourable Somali President Mohamed Siad Barre administration .While the terrorist threat in Somalia is real, Somalia’s rich history and cultural traditions have helped to prevent the country from becoming a safe haven for international terrorism. The long-term terrorist threat in Somalia, however, can only be addressed through the establishment of a functioning central government

We Are Winning the War on Terrorism in Horn of Africa

The threat is from violent extremists who are a small minority of the world's 1.3 billion Muslims, the threat is real. They distort Islam. They kill man, woman and child; Christian and Hindu, Jew and Muslim. They seek to create a repressive caliphate. To defeat this enemy, we must understand who we are fighting against, and what we are fighting for.
