MADRID, Sept 20 (Reuters) - The Spanish military aircraft which will patrol the waters off the coast of Somalia to protect ships from pirates left on Saturday from the Moron air base in Seville, the Ministry of Defence said on Saturday.
The P-3 orion plane was accompanied by a Boeing 727 and a Hercules helicopter, which carried 90 personnel, including crew, the ministry said in a news release more..http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/LK178307.htm
France submits UN draft for anti-piracy action off Somalia
Both France and Spain have promised seafarers that they will step up naval patrols to stamp out piracy of Somalia’s coast, adding their presence to that of the United States, operating out of Djibouti.
This marks an escalation of Euro-American military efforts in the Indian Ocean, ostensibly to protect oil tankers and other craft from piracy, although thus far the only targets have been assorted cargo ships, a French yacht and tuna fishermen.
There may, of course, be a subtext to all of this regarding the desire to control shipping lanes to China from Europe and Black Sea ports.
This will do little for embattled Somalia, which requires land-based reconciliation efforts and the withdrawal of occupying troops. Moreover, until the Ethiopians invaded with U.S. backing in 2006, Somali fishermen and coast-dwellers had been regularly airing criticism of foreign vessels illegally fishing their waters and dumping toxic waste.
