update on Armed al shabaab suspects arrested in LamuSeven Somalis and a Tanzanian crew member of a ship seized with weapons Wednesday appeared before a Mombasa court to face charges of failing to declare the weapons, upon docking at the port of Mombasa, and denied the charges.
The prosecution read that on 14th day of December, 2009 at the Southern Engineering Company Ltd, the suspects were jointly found armed with offensive weapons namely 4 bren guns,1 rocket propelled grenade launcher, 2 AK 47 assault rifles, 202 rounds of live ammunition, 2 rocket propelled grenades and chargers.The court heard that the accused were in possession of the weapons in circumstances that indicated that they were armed with intent to commit a felony namely robbery with violence.The accused, Sadick Rashid, Ali Hersi, Imdey Ahmed, Abdullahi Ali Alasow, Abdullahi Ali, Mahad Hussein and Mohamed Osman, were further charged with being unlawfully present in Kenya without a permit and failure to report entry to the nearest Immigration offices.The accused, who spoke through an interpreter and represented in court by lawyer, William Mogaka, denied all the charges.Chief magistrate, Rosemelle Mutoka, gave them a bond of shs.10 million each and two Kenyan surety each worth shs.5 million.
The case will be heard on 4th February next year.
