Kidnappers demand ransom

Kenyan education ministry officials near the border are demanding a ransom for their release, Kenyan police said on Thursday. Witnesses initially said the 5 were snatched on Wednesday in the Mandera region on the Kenyan side of the border but officials said on Thursday that they had crossed into neighbouring southern Somalia when they were kidnapped. "They have not stated any amount yet, but they have insisted they want money," a police official said on condition of anonymity, quoting information received by emissaries dispatched to the area to secure a release. Two prominent elders from the Mandera region, inhabited mainly by Somali-ethnic Kenyans, were sent across the border to mediate with the Islamist administration in the village of Bulohawo, where the group is being held. "It is true that Kenyan nationals were captured in Bulohawo by the security forces after they crossed the border and illegally entered the town," local district commissioner Ahmed Mohammed Burkus said.
Dangerous group "Their case is being investigated so far but I insist that they were not kidnapped inside Kenya," said Burkus, reached in Bulohawo by phone. "The 5 had crossed the border from Mandera town to go to the border village of Bulohawo inside Somalia for shopping," Kenyan police chief Mohammed Hussein Ali said in a statement..more..http://www.news24.com/News24/Africa/News/0,,2-11-1447_2491963,00.html

Somali talaban Interior Minister Injured in Roadside Attack..jehadist getting some of his own medicine

Somalia's talaban interior minister was injured, and one of his guards killed, in a roadside explosion in the capital, Mogadishu. The attack is the latest reminder of the challenges Somalia's new talaban government faces in restoring security to the country. Interior minister ex- jehadist Abdulkadir Ali Omar was attacked in the city's busy Bakara Market. He escaped with an injured leg, but one of his guards was killed.Omar convened a news conference shortly after the attack. He said the government would continue to work for peace even if its members are killed. He said that everybody knows each other in Mogadishu and the government knows who is responsible for the attack, but would not accuse any group at the moment. No one has claimed responsibility, but Islamist insurgents opposed to the government have launched sporadic attacks on government troops and African Union peacekeepers in the capital. The militias, including the Islamic Party and al-Shabab, which has ties to al-Qaida as well as Somalia's new talaban president Sheikh Sharif Ahmed and many of his ministers, were all members of the same Islamist movement that took control of the country in 2006. President Ahmed was the chairman of the jehadist Islamic Courts Union, and Interior Minister jehadist Omar the deputy chair.Ethiopian troops drove the Islamists out of Mogadishu in late 2006, and Islamists waged a two-year insurgency before the Ethiopians withdrew earlier this year. Meanwhile, a faction of more moderate Islamists ???led by President Ahmed signed up to a U.N.-backed peace process that led to his election shortly after the Ethiopian withdrawal.Al-Shabab, which maintains the most powerful presence, has dismissed President Ahmed as a western puppet and has vowed to continue opposing his government. The Islamic Party(hawiye ), a group of other Islamist militias has also rejected the new government..more..http://www.voanews.com/english/2009-03-26-voa19.cfm.. our sourse..

Somali militants to try captive Kenya officials.. Islamists seize Kenya officials

A Somali militia group that kidnapped five Kenyans on Wednesday intends to put them on trial, a spokesman for the group has told the Nation.
The group, which claims to be part of Al-Shabaab, an extremist group with links to Osama bin Laden’s Al-Qaeda, claimed responsibility for the abduction, which took place Wednesday morning near the border town of Mandera. Among those abducted are civil servants and a driver.
Militiamen claimed that they “arrested” the officials after they crossed the border into Somalia “without permission”.The five have been identified as Wajir South district education officer Moses Mwangi, his quality assurance colleague Charles Nyakundi, the provincial quality assurance officer Onchiri Onyancha, their driver only identified as Abdullahi and an unnamed Wajir South education official. The officials were attending the provincial primary school ball games tournament in Mandera Town in north eastern Kenya. They were abducted at Bula Hawo Town, a kilometre away from the border town of Mandera. They had apparently gone shopping on the Somali side of the border, a fairly normal activity in the area. The governor of Bula Hawo, Mr Ahmed Mohamed Barkuus, told the Nation that the officials had been “arrested” by the militia, which is in charge of security in the area, for crossing illegally into Somalia. The country has not had a government or organised border controls since 1991. Mr Barkuus said the captives will be investigated and taken to court to explain their mission in Somalia. “From the investigations that are still going on, we established they are education officials,” he said. The governor is an official of the interim Somali government but said security is under the control of the Islamist militia, which controls a large swathe of neighbouring Gedo region of Somalia. “They are the ones who are concerned with the security of the town... they are investigating the case,” he told the Nation by phone. But he said the captives were in good condition and that they were being taken good care of. “We have provided them with food and everything,” he said, adding that negotiations were ongoing with Kenyan authorities for the release of the civil servants. Police Commissioner Hussein Ali told the Nation by telephone that everything was being done to free the captives. The Provincial Administration and the police were in touch with the families of the officials to offer help and comfort, he said.“The issue is not legalities, it is extortion,” he said of the claim that the officials had crossed the border without permission. He said the kidnappers were most likely a local militia, and there are many in lawless Somalia, but Al-Shabaab might muscle in to benefit from the incident.Al-Shabaab is an extremist Isamist group, which controls southern and central parts of Somalia, and is opposed to the interim government of President Sheikh Shariff Ahmed. It has on numerous occasions warned the Kenya government over its support for the Somali government and has threatened to wage war against Kenya.Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden recently called for the ouster of President Ahmed accusing him of collaborating with enemies of Islam.Militants have crossed into Kenya several times and raided towns, villages, markets and shopping centres before abducting people, including police officers, and taken them into Somalia. In 2007, two police officers on patrol were kidnapped along the border. Their mutilated bodies were found in a bush on the Somali side. Their firearms and uniforms were stolen. The Mandera police division boss was reported to have contacted the abductors and was by Wednesday evening still negotiating for the release of the five and the government vehicle. The Provincial Administration and the Provincial Security Committee were said to be making similar efforts. Next Page »

MOGADISHU, March 25 (Xinhua) -- A lawyers' association in Somalia Wednesday described the International Criminal Court's (ICC) arrest warrant for the Sudanese President Omar Hassan Al-Bashir as "illegal and against the international law."
The statement from Somali Lawyers Association (SLA) comes as the result of a workshop held Wednesday by members of the association in the Somali capital Mogadishu and attended by Somali government officials including the Somali Attorney General Abdullahi Daahir Barre who supported the lawyers' statement.

Federal Official Says Canadian Youths Recruited By As-Shabaab

I wonder how many other countries are involved in as Shabaab recruiting. A leader in Canada's Somalian community is dismissing reports of young people being recruited by an al-Qaeda-linked militia terrorists to fight in Somalia, despite evidence it is occurring in the United States and elsewhere. Said Omar, a spokesman for Toronto's Khalid bin Walid mosque, which mainly serves the city's Somalian population, said he hasn't heard about any such recruitment efforts...more..http://mypetjawa.mu.nu/archives/196961.php

Let's Make A Deal

March 25, 2009: Yemeni police found evidence that a recent suicide bomb attack in Yemen (which killed four South Korean tourists) was carried out by a Yemeni who received training in Somalia. Each month, over a thousand Somalis are smuggled across the Gulf of Aden into Somalia, and it's easy enough to get a ride on one of the smuggling boats heading to Somalia. Apparently, Yemeni Islamic terrorist groups have found it convenient to set up bases in Somalia, because Yemeni police have made it too difficult to do so in Yemen itself.
The UN announced what everyone already knew, that there were two major pirate operations in Somalia. One operats from five fishing villages in the north (Puntland), and parks most of its captured ships off the village of Eyl. The other group operates on the east coast, in the town of Xarardheere. The east coast group also operates in the Gulf of Aden.
Battles between al Shabaab and government gunmen in the south have caused several thousand civilians to flee, and left over a hundred fighters dead or wounded. Most go to other parts of Somalia, but an increasing number are going to Kenya, where a growing number of Somali refugees live in UN administered camps. The UN believes that Somalia has stabilized enough for a peacekeeping force to be useful. The economy is actually growing, thanks in part to about a billion dollars a year sent by expatriate Somalis. The $30-40 million in pirate ransoms is tiny compared to the remittances. There are also many parts of the country that have been relatively peaceful (mainly because local warlords know that peace is more prosperous that constant fighting and banditry).
The Islamic groups that now control the government, don't want peacekeepers, but do want the weapons ban lifted so that it's easier to import guns. The new government would also like to get more weapons donated by foreign nations. This is unlikely, as none of the foreign powers trusts the Somalis. At the same time, the Somalis are very hostile to foreign peacekeepers.
Uganda has sent a third battalion of troops to Mogadishu, and now has about 2,000 there. The Somali government is raising a force of 10,000 fighters to pacify the southern part of the country, and would like the UN, and other foreigners, to help with money and guns. In return, the Islamic clerics who run the government now, will keep al Qaeda out. Osama bin Laden recently released a recorded audio message backing al Shabaab against the more moderate Islamic Courts militias and the Islamic Scholars Association that now control the government (which has U.S. backing, something al Qaeda cannot tolerate...http://www.strategypage.com/qnd/somalia/articles/20090325.aspx

Rights violations worse in Somalia in 2008: UN

GENEVA (AFP) — The human rights situation deteriorated last year in war-wracked Somalia with serious violations by all parties, but there is a new "window of opportunity" now, a UN expert said Wednesday."In 2008, the conflict in Somalia took on a new dimension with targeted killings of dozens of humanitarian workers and civil society activists," said Shamsul Bari, the UN expert for the Horn of Africa nation."The lack of accountability for past and current violations and abuses of human rights and international humanitarian law has further exacerbated the situation," said Bari, presenting his report to the UN Council on Human Rights.
Bari, who comes from Bangladesh, said that every party to almost two decades of conflict in Somalia was guilty of serious violations. He drew a "grim picture" of a lawless mainly desert nation ravaged by both specific and indiscriminate violence, with "targeted attacks, abduction and killings of aid workers and human rights defenders, in particular journalists; smuggling and human trafficking; looting and extensive property destruction; as well as sexual and gender-basedviolence."..more..http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5gco4AdUKLppfV2YvkbjNUbbAi1iw

Others have stopped attending the mosque, Abubakar As-Saddique Islamic Center , which has been at the center of a growing national investigation into the missing men that has reached the level of the FBI and U.S. Senate. Authorities say the men went back to Somalia to fight in jihad.
Most of the families whose children vanished don’t want to talk to the media and answer questions about their disappeared ones, but one spoke with The Minnesota Daily Tuesday afternoon....

African Union beefs up Somali peacekeeping force

ADDIS ABABA, March 24 (Reuters) - Uganda has sent a third battalion of troops to Somalia to beef up the African Union peacekeeping force in the Horn of Africa nation.
The AU said in a statement after a meeting in Ethiopia on Monday that Algeria had helped the battalion deploy and that it wanted to get the force up to 8,000 as originally planned.
The peacekeeping force consists of troops from Uganda and Burundi and stood at about 3,500 before the latest deployment. A Ugandan battalion usually consists of some 800 soldiers. Burundi has also said it plans to send a third battalion.
News of the deployment is likely to enrage hardline al Shabaab Islamist insurgents who have launched deadly mortar and suicide attacks against the African troops this year, killing 11 in the deadliest strike.
Analysts say the insurgents are preparing to step up attacks on the peacekeepers and the new government of Sheikh Sharif Ahmed, the country's first Islamist president...more..http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/LO695903.htm

Somali pirates attack yacht off Seychelles

The Seychelles state broadcaster says Somali pirates have hijacked a yacht with two people onboard, according to AP.The Seychelles Broadcasting Corporation says it received the report on Wednesday from government officials. It says the yacht is registered in the Seychelles but has no further information on the attack.Somali pirates attack shipping passing their lawless coast almost daily. But their success rate has recently fallen, in part due to an influx of foreign warships into the Gulf of Aden.Analysts say the naval presence is encouraging the pirates to shift their operations east into the Indian Ocean, toward the Seychelles.

Al-Qaeda recruits young in Yemen

months young people, less than 18 years old, to carry out terrorist attacks in the country. Al-Qaeda leaders trained these people inside and outside Yemen. The announcement comes after the arrest of a most suspect wanted by Yemen and Saudi authorities, Abdullah Abdul Rahman al-Harbi who was held mid this month. Investigations with al-Harbi revealed he has been living in Yemen for nine months and that he, during the period and while he has worked as a tailor shop manager, recruited some faces to be al-Qaeda affiliates. A leader of an extremist group of those groups inspired by the ideology of al-Qaeda has married him to a Yemeni girl. Al-Aufi name was in a list of 85 wanted suspects the Saudi Interior Ministry made public in January. Investigations are ongoing with the arrestee to know if al-Qaeda had planned further attacks in Yemen after two recent suicide attacks against South Koreans, one of which a deadly attack that killed four South Korean tourists along with local guide and injured six others in eastern Yemen. A second suicide bomber blew himself up at South Korean investigators who arrived to investigate the Shibam attack but the convoy survived with no injuries. The Shibam suicide bomber is said to have trained in Somalia. FRSaba

Somalia: US policy shift towards Islamists after Ethiopian pullout....just another , left-wing apologists columest..'Very Naive, clueless.... misguide

Last month Somali MPs elected Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, leader of the Djibouti-based Alliance for the Re-liberation of Somalia (ARS), as the country's new president. Sharif was previously chairman of the Union of Islamic Courts (UIC), which briefly ruled Somalia in 2006 before the United States-backed Ethiopian invasion forced the UIC into exile in Eritrea.
Ethiopia began pulling out troops in 2008, having succeeded in uniting Somalia's various Islamic and clan-based militias against it. Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi complained that the West had not given Ethiopia enough political and financial support. Washington had backed the stooge Transitional Federal Government (TFG) of warlords, which recently collapsed following the Ethiopian withdrawal. after Ethiopia withdrew, the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), comprising around 3,400 Ugandan and Burundian troops, remained in Mogadishu, though Uganda is considering pulling out citing lack of money, equipment and troops.
Whilst the new Obama administration has made no official comment on Sharif's election, the US embassy in Kenya issued a statement welcoming it, which is something of a policy turnaround with Washington having previously denounced the UIC as an affiliate of Al-Qaeda. Other western governments have also been supportive of Sharif and his new government.
Sharif for his part has welcomed the coming to power of Barack Obama and glossed over the brutal actions of the US/Ethiopian intervention. Early in 2008 the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) facilitated talks in Djibouti that sought to bring the "moderate" elements of the ARS opposition into negotiations with the rump TFG and Ethiopia. This split the ARS into two factions: ARS-Djibouti, led by Sharif, which took part in the talks and agreed to a ceasefire; and ARS-Asmara, led by Sheikh Hassan Dahir ‘Aweys', which called for Sharif's expulsion and refused to negotiate with foreign elements whilst Ethiopia remained in the country.
In June 2008 Sharif's faction and the TFG signed an accord in Djibouti on the cessation of hostilities, Ethiopia's withdrawal, plans for a government of national unity, and the establishment of a 10,000-strong national security force comprising both ARS and government troops.
The Djibouti Agreement set out that the new parliament would be comprised of 550 seats, up from 275, with the new MPs being drawn primarily from the ARS-Djibouti faction. Consequently 149 new opposition members from the ARS were sworn in to parliament just before the recent presidential election, which was subsequently won by Sharif.
The US now tacitly welcomes an Islamist government that is not markedly different from the one that the US/Ethiopian invasion of Somalia ?????? helped to overthrow, with so much loss of life from the subsequent violence and chaos. An estimated 1.2 million Somalis have fled their homes, and 16,000 civilians have been killed in the ensuing Iraq-style insurgency that plunged the country into chaos, where warlords and pirates flourished...more..http://www.wsws.org/articles/2009/mar2009/soma-m25.shtml

Al-Qaeda asks Sudanese to prepare for war

Al-Qaeda’s number two in commend Ayman Zawahiri urged the people of Sudan to prepare for a long guerrilla war against the West and asked the country's embattered President Omar al-Bashir to "repent," in an Internet video message released on Tuesday.Zawahiri said the Sudanese people should "make preparations by training, equipping, storing and organizing for a long guerrilla war, because the modern-day Crusade (Westerners) has bared its fangs at you."In relation to the ICC’s arrest warrant for Bashir earlier this month on charges of war crimes over the conflict in Darfur, Zawahiri said the Sudan’s regime was “reaping what it sowed.”..more..http://www.alarabiya.net/articles/2009/03/24/69162.html

Bashir in Eritrea, defying warrant

KHARTOUM, Sudan Sudan's president traveled to Eritrea on Monday, choosing one of Africa's most politically isolated nations for his first trip abroad since an international court sought his arrest on charges of war crimes in the Darfur region. The one-day visit followed Eritrea's official invitation to Sudan's Lt. Gen. Omar Bashir, who faces the arrest warrant by the Netherlands-based International Criminal Court (ICC). Eritrean television showed live coverage of Gen. Bashir being greeted at the airport in the capital, Asmara, by his counterpart, President Isaias Afwerki, along with drummers and dancers. Sudanese state television later Monday showed live images of Gen. Bashir returning to Khartoum. Sudanese Foreign Minister Deng Alor said the visit was "important" and reflected Eritrean "solidarity ... with Sudan against the ICC." Eritrean Information Minister Ali Abdu told the Associated Press that Gen. Bashir was accompanied by heads of security and intelligence and was there to discuss regional security. The ICC charged Gen. Bashir on March 4 of leading a counterinsurgency against Darfur rebels that involved rapes, killings and other atrocities against civilians. His government has been accused of unleashing Arab militiamen known as janjaweed against Darfur civilians in a drive to put down a revolt by ethnic Africans in the region. Up to 300,000 people have died and 2.7 million driven from their homes in the conflict since 2003, according to the United Nations. ..more..http://washingtontimes.com/news/2009/mar/24/bashir-in-eritrea-defying-warrant/

Yemen plays great roles for maintaining stability in the African Horn and Red Sea

Disturbances in Somalia, the African Horn and the growth in piracy are a direct result of the international dispute over the control of maritime routes and energy resources in the Gulf of Aden, Read Sea and Indian Ocean, said participants attending a forum held at Ali Bin Zayed hall in Sana’a University, Yemen on Sunday March 22. The forum attracted a wide variety of participants, including 22 lecturers, professors of history and experts in Yemeni African affairs from Yemen, France and Djibouti. The forum entitled ‘Yemen and the African Horn’ was organized by Sana’a University in collaboration with the French Embassy in Yemen and will run from March 22 to March 23. The Forum focused on Yemen’s historical relations with the African Horn and sought to highlight Yemen’s current role in maintaining security, stability and peace in the African Horn, the Red Sea and Indian Ocean. The forum also focused on the significance of the Gulf of Aden and Bab al-Mandab for the international maritime, the Bab al-Mandab is one of seven world oil transit choke-points and one of the busiest martime transit point in the world. 140 vessels pass through the Bab al-Mandab from the Sues Canal and the Read Sea heading to south Asia and East and South Africa daily. The forum also discussed the growing concern of immigration from Africa to Yemen, smuggling and piracy as well as the burdens Yemen has been shouldering as a result of these problems and the roles Yemen has been playing to restore stability to Somalia and to the African Horn in General. At the inauguration ceremony Dr. Abdul Kareem al-Eryani , political advisor to President Saleh tackled the conflict in the African Horn and talked about the historical relations between Yemen and the African Horn states in the East of Africa. Dr. al-Eryani stressed the importance of brining attention to the effects of the dispute in the African Horn and in Somalia in particular which has resulted in mass migration from the African Horn particularly from Somalia to Yemen and placed significant burdens on the country. He also referred to Yemen’s continual calls to solve the Somali issue and the piracy crisis which is continuing despite international efforts to combat both. ..more..http://www.yobserver.com/reports/10016021.html
