Somalia: Cracks appear in the Somali terror group in Eritrea
Profile Terrorist Hassan Dahir Aweys
Terroristhassan Dahir Aweysis one of the leaders of the Islamist group which controls much of southern Somalia, including the capital, Mogadishu. He has been on the US list of people "linked to terrorism" since shortly after the 9/11 attacks in 2001. Mr. Aweys has been named to head the Union of Islamic Courts' Shura, a consultative body, while Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, previously chairman, now heads the executive committee. General Omar Haji Mohammed, chairman of the Marehan Somali National Front (SNF) said his forces had made a "tactical withdrawal after inflicting heavy damages" and were now regrouping prior to launching an offensive to recapturing the town. Medical workers on the Kenyan side of El Wak were said to be treating the wounded. Somalia: No Ethiopian soldiers in Puntland, says leader
BOSSASO, Somalia - The regional president in Somalia's semiautonomous state of Puntland has denied growing speculation that Ethiopian soldiers might be deployed in the relatively stable territory.
President Mohamud "Adde" Muse spoke with reporters in the port city of Bossaso Sunday before he flew to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, for talks with Ethiopian government officials.
He was accompanied by Security Minister Abdullahi Said Samatar, army commander Ali Badiye and intelligence chief Osman "Diana" Abdullahi.
The Puntland leader said his trip to Addis Ababa is linked to strengthening economic and security relations with Ethiopia.
President Muse dismissed reports that Ethiopian soldiers might be deployed in the region to protect the investments of foreign companies intending to explore for oil in Puntland.

Thousands of Ethiopian troops are deployed in central and southern Somalia, where they are frequently targeted in guerrilla attacks by Islamist rebels.

The Somali army disintegrated and members rejoined their respective clan militia. Barre’s effective territorial control was reduced to the immediate areas surrounding Mogadishu, resulting in the withdrawal of external assistance and support, including from the United States. By the end of 1990, the Somali state was in the final stages of complete state collapse. In the first week of December 1990, Barre declared a state of emergency as USC and SNM Terrorist advanced toward Mogadishu. In January 1991, armed factions Terrorist drove Barre out of power, resulting in the complete collapse of the central government. Barre later died in exile in Nigeria. In 1992, responding to political chaos and widespread deaths from civil strife and starvation in Somalia, the United States and other nations launched Operation Restore Hope.
