President speaks out the fighting in the capital
Somalia’s president Sharif Sheik Ahmed on Monday condemned the continuation of the fighting in the capital as unlucky reiterating his offer for peace with the Islamist groups and to come to the negotiating table,In a news conference held today in the presidential house, President Ahmed said fighting is not the solution and his government is ready to reconcile with the rebel groups. Ahmed said the government will defend the country's sovereignty using any means necessary to stop the fighting. Two killed in brief Mogadishu clashes

MOGADISHU (AFP) – Hardline Islamist rebels clashed with government troops in Somalia's war-riven capital for a fifth successive day Monday, as the country's embattled leader vowed to stay in control.Witnesses said at least two people were killed when a mortar shell landed near a cafe in northern Mogadishu, the epicentre of clashes that have killed at least 41 people and injured around 200, mostly civilians, since Thursday.
"A mortar shell struck very close to a cafe and killed two civilians while three others were injured," witness Mohammed Hassan told AFP.Earlier police said the rebels had attacked government troops in the Fagah district of Mogadishu.
"The fighting is very heavy and both sides are using machine-guns and anti-aircraft weapons," police officer Mohamed Abdi told AFP.Witnesses said the fighting subsided after an hour.

Ransoms blamed for Somali piracy

A Somali minister has said the problem of piracy in the region is being made worse by the international community paying ransoms. Abdul Karis Osman Issa, public works minister in semi-autonomous Puntland, said investment should be directed at beefing up mainland security. He said the pirates are better financed and armed than the regional government.
Meanwhile, Mogadishu is reportedly calm after three days of fierce fighting which left more than 50 people dead.

AU Mission Blames Weekend Somalia Fighting on Anti-Peace Forces
Weekend fighting in Somalia's capital, Mogadishu, described by some accounts as the worst in weeks has reportedly killed 35 people. Mortars and machine-gun fire reportedly pounded Mogadishu as residents fled the city seeking safety.
Major Barigye Bahoku, spokesman for the African Union Mission in Somalia told VOA the fighting was between pro-government Islamist fighters and gunmen seeking to overthrow President Sheik Sharif Sheik Ahmed's new government.
"There have been some skirmishes in Mogadishu, especially in the northern suburbs and parts of Mogadishu for about couple days ago. And the information we have does indicate that the forces of government on the one side and the forces opposed to the peace process on the other side and the clan militias who can fall on either side, are the ones who have been involved in these skirmishes," he said.
Bahoku said part of AMISOM's assignment is to create the atmosphere for rival Somali groups to dialogue, but he said there were forces still opposed to peace in Somalia.
"I think some people do read it wrongly, the mandate of AMISOM. The mandate of AMISOM is to let these people talk, but how far can we go to convince all the sides at any one time to talk. First of all, if lawlessness and the lack of security in Somalia have been going on for about 19 years, and so even when some people have seriously taken the peace process on course and they are talking, there are others who don't fall under the command or control of anyone…so when you say what is AMISOM doing, yes AMISOM has been trying to create conditions for all these people to talk. Islamist militants, who have waged a two-year, blood-soaked insurgency, continue to battle pro-government forces for territory throughout southern Somalia. Since January, a surge in violence has driven more than 25,000 people into the camps of eastern Kenya - already overflowing with two decades' worth of Somali refugees - which has badly strained one of the world's largest humanitarian operations.
In Hagadera, the largest of three camps, new arrivals like Kune are crowding with relatives in bare, tree-branch huts covered in plastic sheets or fraying strips of clothing. The refugees say that the insurgents - a wholly separate phenomenon from the secular, ransom-hungry pirates - have imposed religious law on their towns and killed civilians who resisted. The pirates cause problems in the ocean," said Kune, 40, seated on the dirt floor of a hut, her round face creased with worry. "But the Islamists cause many more problems inside the country."
Relief agencies are concerned that anti-piracy efforts are diverting attention and resources from the plight of these refugees and hundreds of thousands in even more desperate camps in Somalia. While countries pledged $213 million last month to beef up security forces in the East African nation, the United Nations' request for $918 million for relief programs is still two-thirds unmet.
A funding shortfall also forced the U.N. World Food Program to reduce rations in the camps - the refugees' only source of food - by 17 percent last month. Ahmed said their threats were heart-numbing as they struggled to subdue him, with Jama and others saying they had killed two Somali Christians and would do the same to him.His pleas that he was a Kenyan whose faith was respected in his home country, he said, fell on deaf ears.“I was abused, and they also abused my faith as the religion for pagans, which they said is unacceptable in their region,” he said. “I told them that I am Kenyan-born and brought up in Kenya, and my Christian faith is respected and recognized in Garissa.”Jama ordered Ahmed’s incarceration, and he was locked up in an immigration cell for nine hours. Ex-soldier could face death over Iraq murders, rape

Steven Green, 23, of Midland, Texas, was found guilty Thursday in U.S. District Court in Paducah, Kentucky, said court spokeswoman Vanessa Armstrong. She said the penalty phase of the trial begins Monday.
Jurors deliberated for more than 10 hours before finding Green guilty of murder, rape, conspiracy and obstruction of justice, according to the court's Web site.
Green, 23, was accused of leading a group of soldiers that committed the crimes in 2006 in the Mahmoudiya area, south of Baghdad.
They killed the girl's father, mother and younger sister before raping and killing her and burning her body.
Last year, then-Pfc. Jesse Spielman received a 110-year sentence in the case for felony murder, conspiracy to commit rape, rape and housebreaking with the intent to commit rape.

At least 12 Jihadist killed in Somalia clashes

MOGADISHU, May 8 (Reuters) - At least 12 Jihadist were killed and scores wounded in clashes between Somalia's rebels and pro-government militias in the latest fighting in the anarchic Horn of Africa country, witnesses and militia said on Friday.
President Sheikh Sharif Ahmed's government is struggling against a powerful insurgency and trying to woo other rebels over to his administration, seen by many as the best hope to restore peace after 18 years of war. Al Shabaab fighters and those of an Islamist group loyal to the government exchanged mortar and anti-aircraft fire late on Thursday along an industrial road in the Somali capital, residents said. "The stubborn opposition attacked our fighters and the government soldiers on our side," Sheikh Abdirahim Isse Adow, a spokesman for the pro-government Islamic Courts Union, told Reuters by telephone.
"We killed eight of them and injured 30 others in one spot. I am sure more died. We also captured an anti-aircraft missile mounted on a battle wagon from them. From our side, four died and six others were injured. Innocent civilians were also injured."
Al Shabaab officials were not available for comment. Residents said they saw at least 16 bodies and hospital sources said 55 people were injured in the fighting. "We have no hope of peace ... I have not seen battle wagons fighting in Mogadishu for years," said resident Halima Ali.
In another incident in central Somalia, al Shabaab captured 200 new recruits heading for police training in Mogadishu, a local official said. "Al Shabaab disappeared with them into the jungle and blindfolded them. These recruits were not armed but I think they will not be killed," said Mohamed Barqadle, chairman of Buloburde district in the central region of Hiran.
Somalia, without an effective central government since 1991, has become synonymous with anarchy, and pickup trucks with machineguns mounted on the back are its signature image.
Thousands of people have been killed and one million displaced in fighting since Ethiopian troops ousted the Islamic Courts Union from Mogadishu in late 2006, making Somalia one of the world's worst humanitarian emergencies. Ukraine plans action against Somali pirates

Ukrainian First Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Turchinov ordered on Tuesday that a team be formed to rescue 24 Ukrainian sailors captured by Somali pirates aboard the Ariana. The British-owned ship, which flies the Maltese flag, was seized in the early hours of May 2, near the Seychelles Islands. Ukrainian intelligence and security services, the Ministry of Transport and the Foreign Ministry will be involved in rescue efforts, RIA Novosti reports.
The ship was heading from Brazil to the Middle East with a cargo of soy. It is currently harbored in Hobyo, a Somali port city. Greek intermediaries announced today that the pirates have made their ransom demands for the ship known, according to RIA Novosti. Those demands have not been made public.
On Tuesday, the crew was reported to be unharmed and the ship well-stocked with food and supplies. The ship’s owners, Seven Seas Maritime London, broke off telephone contact with the pirates at that time to prevent information leaks, the Unian news agency reports.
Meanwhile, the seizure of another crew of Ukrainians, eight people on board the Dutch craft Marathon, was announced yesterday. The small vessel loaded with coke was captured in the Gulf of Aden, bringing the number of ships currently being held by pirates to over 20, with more than 300 seamen aboard them, according to Nasdaq.
Seychelles, an archipelago in the Indian Ocean north of Madagascar, has appealed to the international community for protection from the Somali pirates, the British newspaper Telegraph reports. India responded by sending a warship to the area, where pirates have attacked eight ships in the last week. The pirates are expanding the range of their activities as the international military presence in the Gulf of Aden has been stepped up. The Seychelles are a day’s sailing from Somalia.
Last September, the Ukrainian-operated ship Faina, loaded with Ukrainian-made heavy military equipment bound for Kenya, was seized by pirates with a crew of 17 Ukrainians, three Russians and a Latvian on board. Spanish navy detains suspected pirates off Somalia

MADRID (AFP) – A Spanish navy warship on Thursday captured seven suspected pirates who they said tried to attack a merchant ship off the Somali coast, the Spanish government said.
They intervened in response to a call for help from the Maltese-flagged Anny Petrakis, the defence ministry said.They sent their helicopter to the scene, at which point the pirates to aborted their attempt to board the merchant ship, said the ministry statement.
The suspects tried to flee but surrendered after the helicopter fired several warning shorts. Hard Line Insurgent Group Vows to Increase Attacks on Somali Government
increase attacks on the new Somali government after one of its commanders escaped an assassination attempt. The attack on the insurgent leader's vehicle in the capital, Mogadishu left at least two people dead and over 50 others wounded. Al-Shabaab has blamed the Islamic Court Union allied to the new government for the assassination attempt. But the Islamic Court Union sharply denied the accusation.
Somali political analyst Ali Abdullahi told VOA that the new government is too weak to prevent any more attacks.
"With the arrival of last couple of days of Dahir Aweys into Mogadishu, it seems that there is a lot of troop buildup by both sides on the side of the government and also on the side of the Islamists and very soon there are going to be clashes as you have seen what has happened today," Abdullahi said.
He said violent clashes between the two Islamic groups would be rampant in the coming days.
"It seems that this (clashes) will increase as the intensity increases from the side of al-Shabaab because al-Shabaab thinks that the current government does not represent them.
