BAIDOA (tf.sf) – Militants loyal to Somalia’s al Qaeda linked group al Shabaab on Wednesday afternoon executed two young Somalis accused of being spies in southern Somalia town.
Officials of al Shabaab said the two persons were found guilty of spying for the transitional federal government of Somalia, the neighboring Kenya and Ethiopia.“All day, al Shabaab owned military vehicles mounted with big speakers were crisscrossing around the town of Baidoa in Bay region. They called upon the people to congregate in a square in the town” said an eyewitness who asked his name not to be published.“Crowds of local residents got to gather in Ayub football stadium in Baidoa to watch how the execution had been conducted” the resident added during a telephone conversation with me.The alleged ones were brought at the corner of football stadium where a firing squad shot and killed them, the witnesses noted citing children and women among the onlookers of gruesome punishment being meted out.Generally, alleged spies and Christians have been publicly executed. Thieves have had their legs and hands cut off. Women accused of adultery have been beaten and stoned.In March, al Shabaab, which intends to impose a strict version of Sharia Islamic law throughout war-devastated Somalia, has executed a Somali man in the center of war-decimated Mogadishu, charging him with being spy for United States’ Federal Bureau Investigation FBI.In Oct. 2010, the hard-line group has executed two girls in Belet-weyne.
